Hi there, Brittany here! I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying this holiday season! Today I have a fun washi tape DIY to share with you for making your own twist ties! I plan to use them on treat bags but you can also use them to organize cords or hang ornaments on a tree! This is such a quick and simple craft and I think it’s absolutely adorable.
Here is what you will need:
Washi tape (I’m using my glitter washi from PopFizzPaper), scissors, a ruler, thin wire, and wire cutters!
The thinner your wire the better because it will make it really bendable like a regular twist tie. I bought this at a hardware store in the wire section for only a few dollars. You could also get this in the craft section of a store like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. I decided to make my twist ties 5” long but you can adjust this for your needs!
Next you’ll want to cut a piece of washi tape of the same length. I went a little longer on each end so that I could trim it straight if necessary. Lay the washi down sticky side up and set your piece of wire in the center keeping it as straight as possible. It isn’t critical that it be perfectly straight since you are going to be bending and twisting and wrapping it up. But aim for the middle!
Then cut your second piece of washi and line it up on top sticky side down. Smooth all the edges together and you have yourself a twist tie! You can customize these any way you want. I really liked the look of a thinner twist tie so I simply trimmed each side down a little.
Another fun way to customize your twist tie is by using two different styles of washi tape. For this next tie I used some of the LE marble washi from PopFizzPaper on one side and a piece of sparkly silver washi on the other. The combinations are endless and you can really tailor it for your project.
Here’s how they all turned out!
And here’s a look at them on some treat bags I put together to give to my coworkers!
These twist ties are surprisingly sturdy and held up well to all kinds of twisting and bending! I hope you enjoyed this DIY and that you find it helpful this holiday season- or any time of year!
