Easy Back to School Crafts
Hi everyone! Sabrina here to show you some easy and fun DIY back to school items for all ages. I’m going to be showing you 3 different ideas; how to take a plain notebook cover and turn it into a super cute one, how to make washi pencils and even a cute pocket that you can place inside of your notebook or keep it on the side.
Let’s make back to school and homework time at home fun! This is even a great creative outlook for kids and a fun project for you and your child to work on together. This idea is especially great for homework time because what kid wouldn’t be inspired to do their homework using cute pencils and cute notebooks that they created themselves. If you aren’t in school or have no children [in school] don’t stop reading yet because these ideas are great to use for work or for an everyday task or just for organization. So let’s jump right into this and start with the notebook!
Supplies you will need:
1- Notebook
Design Paper of your choice
1- 5x7 cardboard or thick cardstock
Pencils
Washi tape
Glue, mod podge, or adhesive tape
Scissors
*Removing the coil is optional- I removed it because at the time of the photo I wasn’t sure if I wanted to cover the coil holes with washi or paper and re-punch but keep reading to find out what I ended up doing.
First, choose your design paper for your cover once you’ve gotten that glue or add adhesive tape [like I did] and lay the cover down front side first onto your design paper. If your paper is double sided like mine make sure the side with the design that you DON’T want is the side, you are gluing down onto the front side of your cover. Cut off all the excess paper off the edges and your cover is ready to be decorated!
I just took two different shades of blue glitter washi tapes and vertically put that on the left side of the notebook cover. Then I took the other gem washi that came in the Planner Kit and put that vertically on the right side of the notebook. In the middle of the notebook I added a plastic adhesive pocket that I got from the Target Dollar Section and added one sheet of sticky note inside. If you don't have any of these pockets you can create your own by cutting a piece of design paper into any shape and adding a thin line of glue to the sides and bottom and stick it onto the cover. Decorate with some stickers; I used this quote sticker and beautiful gems from the PopFizzPaper Crystal Cove Kit. Once you are done decorating you are all done with your notebook cover!
Some of you are probably wondering “Is she going to recoil her notebook?” and the answer is “No, I am not.” I plan to use this notebook to keep inside of my bag and I don’t want the coils messing up my bag or getting caught with other coiled items in side of my purse so I am going to journal bound it with a textured string. All I did was lined up all the papers inside the front and back cover so that you can see through the holes and then start from the bottom to the top by doing an over and under technique and gluing the ends to the back of the notebook; you can even tie off at the bottom or top if you wished. Bye-bye coil you now have a journal!
Next let’s make a quick pocket that you can glue or tape inside your notebook or just keep it on the side. I am using the thick cardstock that comes in the planner kit you know the one that tells you everything that is in your kit. I am taking a piece of design paper measuring it to be the same size as the card stock and cutting it in half. Take one of those halves and glue it to the back of the cardstock covering all the wording. Grab that other half of design paper and this is where you’re going to create a pocket look; I cut my paper in an angle where I cut up diagonally to the top left corner to give that peeking affect to show the paper behind the one I am gluing on top. Once your shape is created line the back of the paper on both sides with a thin layer of glue and stay close to the edges; do the same to the bottom. Flip the side with the glue over and press it onto the cardstock. Start decorating! I added glitter washi to the bottom horizontally, and to the left side vertically. Grabbed another plastic adhesive pocket and put that onto the middle of the bottom, inserted a piece of designed sticky note and added a larger gem sticker to put onto the top of that adhesive pocket. If you want this pocket inside of your notebook all you do it glue the back of the pocket to the inside or if you want it removable just tape it down with some washi tape. And you're done!
I saved the easiest for last… washi pencils! Choose your washi tape, measure the length of from below the metal down to the where the wood grain starts. Then just lay the washi on the pencil and wrap around that’s it!
